Oh dear goodness I wrote far too much for this ;O;
The word count is about...5000+ and 14 pages long. I have a tiny summary at the end, BUT I will give a very brief cliff-notes version here on what happens!!
Basically, this was meant to be a short story (I swear). But I decided to create a Greendoze NPC for Jasper to interact with, a way to tie into the skill I'm planning to give him (Insight), and things kept evolving from there into this beast.
-Jasper enters the library, and finds a nook off in the very corner. It's a grand, circular window with an overturned bench in front of it. After some brief investigation, and seeing all the colorful imagery about, he chooses to help out in this part of the library.
-While he begins to clean up, he notices an older fellow. He manages (kindly forces) to rope him into helping him out. Despite all the old tom's grumbling and mumbling, he surprisingly dutifully helps Jasper with restoring the place. He learns the tom's name is Wilber.
-They manage to get the nook fairly fixed up, and get to talking. Wilber questions why Jasper chose this spot in particular, and Jasper explains it's because its one of the most important parts of the library: the children's section. Wilber laughs at that, but begrudgingly prompts Jasper to talk about his own family. The old tom then questions why he left them for the guild. Jasper talks smoothly, but still chooses his words carefully.
-After the nook is restored, they finally get to the spot that Wilber was fussing with earlier. Jasper realises that underneath the rubble is a set of children's drawings, and Wilber comments that he didn't want his grandkid's hard work ruined. Turns out the grumpy old cat knew that this was a kid's section all along.
-Wilber finally opens up a little about himself, and his own family. He talks about his grandkids, and how this is one of their favorite places to go after school. He’s been…estranged from his son for quite a few years. But his grandkids always sought him out and dragged him in here. No matter how many times he said no, they still managed to bring him in here to play. All this time he thought he hated it, but when he saw the place in ruins, he couldn’t stand to see it like that.
-Things are cleaned up pretty quickly after that: the nook with its cushioned bench and shelves are restored as well as it could be in a day, needs a bit of dusting though, and the cabinet full of art supplies and its bulletin of childrens' drawings are back in their proper places.
-Wilber stops Jasper before they part ways, and tells him to bring his kids next time so they can help stop his own from bothering him all the time. Jasper laughs and agrees. But the old cat eyes the younger tom, and asks if he still keeps in touch with them. Jasper is a little surprised, but says yes. He writes to them almost every week. He pointedly hints at Wilber to write his own son a letter. (And then shouts at him from across town to write him a letter. Can't be too subtle)
-A few days later, Jasper looks through the window of the library. Inside he sees a hunched figure with a cap, and three little forms running around and pulling on his arms.
Thank you so, SO much for letting me submit this late!!! ;; <3
